In-Depth National AmeriSpeak Survey (206)

Study Information

MAARC’s Survey Research Core, under the direction of NORC at the University of Chicago, will conduct a national survey using a nationally representative panel (AmeriSpeak) to assess public opinion on policies and practices related to SUDs, overdose, and criminal-legal involvement (CLI) across time, geographic areas, and subpopulations. Our target sample size will be 6,825 completed surveys, allowing for more robust analyses of less common events, including SUD and CLI involvement. This project will specifically screen 20,000 household adults to identify 3,000 respondents with SUD or CLI histories and recruit additional participants via network sampling to assess individuals who are unhoused/in unstable housing situations. A group of 3,500 people not reporting drug use will provide comparison data. We will use statistical weights to adjust our data to US census benchmarks, accounting for selection probabilities (demographics and region) and non-response to the survey. We will address key constraints (e.g., internalized stigma, co-occurring mental health conditions) facing individuals with and without CLI who might engage SUD treatment and other services to promote and maintain recovery, including respondents’ experiences with Medicaid and other funders of SUD treatment and services. The survey items for this specialized national cohort will be developed in conjunction with input from JCOIN 2.0 Research Hubs. Survey findings will be disseminated to a broad group of policymakers, practitioners and collaborators. Findings will help advance public health by informing the development of new and refined interventions and policies to address the overdose crisis in the US, including improving understanding of the barriers and facilitators that moderate this crisis.
