Learning Experiences to Advance Practice (LEAP)

LEAP Investigator Track

The LEAP Investigator Track is a competitive track within LEAP designed for a professional whose goal is to be an independent investigator by proposing and completing funded research projects.

Participants will gain skill with grant writing, research design, the nuances for a successful proposal and the successful conduct of research.

The Investigator track is designed for individuals interested in a career as an independent investigator and will focus on an experiential project to be carried out over 12 months. This may be a grant writing, research, or publishing project of your choosing or LEAP can coordinate your working with current JCOIN investigators on a project. This track will emphasize research proposal writing, grant management, mentorship, and advanced research skills needed to be successful as an independent investigator for projects within the criminal legal and/or health fields.

The program consists of a one-year research development program commencing in December of 2024. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in research knowledge and skills workshops, networking, and mentoring. Participants will refine their goals for the program in a supportive setting.

The LEAP Investigator Track admission requires a competitive submission of an application including a brief description of a proposed research project. Participants will be selected via a competitive submission process.

Investigators are expected to fully commit to this program in the following ways:

  • Attend monthly virtual sessions including a program launch and orientation
  • Participate in pre- and post-program evaluations (i.e., surveys, focus groups)
  • Attend and participate in the Academic Consortium of Criminal Justice Health (ACCJH) conference (held in various U.S. cities each spring) and attend an in-person JCOIN Steering Committee meeting (if held) in early summer (travel funding provided)
  • Engage with program mentors, peers, and JCOIN members, as required
  • Complete an experiential learning project

Applications are being accepted for the 2024-25 cohort of 10 scholar and 10 investigator participants and must be completed by 11/06/24. Applications will be reviewed by the JCOIN LEAP program leadership team and scored using a detailed rubric. All scoring will be based on the strength of written goals, quality of curriculum vitae/resume as a fit for this program, articulated plan to engage in research as a collaborator, and described motivation to participate in research within the criminal legal and health fields.
